Senior James McGlynn has proven to be one of the best distance runners on the Unionville boys’ cross country team this season. He has shown his dedication to his teammates, coach, and also to himself throughout his years as a runner on the team, allowing him to be named a team captain. His goals as a captain are to motivate his teammates to push themselves to their limits while also having a positive attitude. He leads by example, showing up early to practices, and he provides positive encouragement to his peers. He hopes to establish a good baseline for when the seniors leave, putting the underclassmen in a good position for the future.
McGlynn understands the importance of hard work and determination. On average, he runs 30 miles per week while also doing cross-training four times a week. His hard work paid off when he achieved a personal two-mile record at the Unionville Two-Mile Bash, running a 9:51.40.
As a captain, McGlynn emphasizes the value of hard work to the rest of the team in order to attain success. As he looks to the future, McGlynn hopes to run cross country at an NCAA Division 1 cross country program after high school. In order to do this, he is attempting to gain recognition from coaches. His goal by the end of the season is to have a personal record under four minutes in a mile.
When asked if he had any advice for underclassmen, runners, and other athletes, McGlynn responded, “Train insane, or remain the same.” It is evident that McGlynn follows this motto, as he has been able to find immense success through the hard work he has put in. The future is bright for James McGlynn, and the Unionville community is excited to see what he can do in college and beyond.
