The arrival of October doesn’t just mean fall and pumpkin spice—October is also National Bullying Awareness Month. This month is a good reminder to take action, especially at the local level in schools and communities, to foster safe and supportive environments. At Unionville High School, multiple preventative measures and programs exist to help stop bullying.
One of the core preventative measures against bullying in high school is Policy 249. This policy defines bullying and includes guidelines on reporting, investigating, and disciplining acts of bullying. Another is the Safe2Say Something Program. Safe2Say is run by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General and is meant to help stop youth violence, including bullying.
Aside from school policy, the Kindness Committee at Unionville also exists. The committee, composed of students from all schools of the district, is a beacon of hope. It is focused on promoting and spreading kindness, inspiring us all to be better and do better.
This month is meant to remind us to take time and do our part in stopping bullying. Even though October is only one month out of twelve, it’s important to remember this no matter what time or place. By raising awareness, teaching about anti-bullying, and encouraging students to report what happens, we can empower people to stand up against harmful behaviors and foster a culture of unity and empathy. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where every individual can thrive without fear of bullying. This golden rule is our goal, our commitment, and our motivation.
